When we took Izzy back to the ICU yesterday, she immediately
started to look better. She acted better most of the day. She
finally saw a pulmonologist last night and he thinks they are on
the right track. He is concerned that the type of adenovirus has
not been identified yet, but hopefully it will be soon. Apparently,
the treatment doesn't change, but there are types of this virus
that can cause permanent lung damage. If McKenzie has that type, it
may indicate a need to watch her more closely.
Last night was rough. She didn't sleep much. They switched the type of medicine in the nebulizer. While it isn't supposed to be much different than albuteral, it seemed to work better. After each treatment last night, she coughed for half an hour and then when her nose was suctioned, lots came out. While that may be gross, by morning, she was sounding much, much better. Now, with each breathing treatment, the coughs are less and she is getting clearer. She is sleeping better and she played a lot today. She was more our Izzy today than she has been in a very long time. We saw a lot less of the grumpy, angry girl she has been in the hospital. Even her eating is getting better. And finally, Ma was able to visit. It was very hard on my mom to be so close to Izzy and not be able to see her because mom was sick.
Izzy tried to rip the IV out of her head, so it was removed this evening. So, the only thing left is to get her off of the oxygen. First, all of the congestion needs to be gone so that she can breathe properly. We dropped her down on the oxygen today and her sats fell immediately into the mid-70s. If we can get off the oxygen, I'm sure they would send her home. Even though she is doing so well, she remains in the ICU. My feeling is that they have the room there and the last time they released her to the floor she went backward. They don't want that to happen again. Our opinion is that she is much too healthy to be in the ICU, but we won't complain about the attention Izzy is getting.
Dale and I sort of celebrated our anniversary today (it is Wednesday). When my mom came to the hospital we were able to go out to lunch together (Phin is being spoiled by Grandma and Papa Stothers for the weekend). Unfortunately, it was not the nice meal out we hoped for because the conversation was very one-sided. I have had laryngitis for the last three days. While I have some of my voice back, it is very squeaky and it hurts my lungs to talk. This is my version of the adenovirus (and yes I know some people are finding it hard to believe Melonie can be quiet). Tonight, Dale stays with Izzy and I will sleep. Hopefully, I will wake up feeling healthy again (or at least better).
Thanks for all of the love and support you have sent our way in the last couple of weeks. It has been unbelieveably hard for Dale and I and the kids, but all of you have helped us through. Thanks,
Mel
