Last night was a bad night for Izzy and Daddy. The alarms kept
going off because Izzy kept desatting. While she remained asleep
through it, it can't be good sleep when you have loud, annoying
beeps going off every half an hour. Needless to say, Dale did not
sleep. The day was better, but Izzy has officially gone stir crazy.
Dale arranged for Izzy to take a wagon ride through the peds floor
today and she loved it, but she didn't want it to end and Dale got
the distinct impression she thought she was leaving for good,
despite carting around an oxygen tank and IV pole. The wagon stayed
in her room and when Ma, Papa, Phin, and I walked in, she
immediately jumped into my arms and then pointed toward the wagon.
She wanted to go again. That didn't happen and she grew agitated.
She was happy for a little while just sitting in the wagon (it is a
lower perspective of the room). Later, I tried that same manuever
and all it did was anger her because I was just pushing her back
and forth in place. The only thing I could do to distract from her
longing to leave was bring out the books. Books have become one of
her favorite things. She will grab one book, throw it at you,
you'll ask, "should I read this," and she will nod her head
vigorously. I've read the book "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb" about
200 times in the week we've been here.
Izzy also got to see Ma today and more importantly, Ma got to see Izzy. With my mom's new job, she hasn't been able to see much of any of her kids and not being able to come to the hospital has been hard on her. Phin stayed with Papa again. So, Dale and I got a lunch together and it wasn't crunched in a chair bending over a lap in the corner of a hospital room. Then we went grocery shopping. Not much excitement, but I'm pretty impressed that we managed to get all of the laundry done, go shopping, and clean all of the dishes, while juggling kids, working, and spending half our time in the hospital. Too bad our house will be hidden by a jungle by the time Izzy gets out of here.
We don't know when she will escape. She has to be able to breathe room air both awake and asleep. Right now, she is at 0.75 liters of oxygen, she just fell asleep, and her sats are at 97%, which is great for her. We may be able to ween her, but when she is active her sats have been around 94% on 0.75 liters. We'll see what happens when she falls sound asleep. That is generally when she goes below 90%, her threshold at this point in time. They continue to give her IV antibiotics, but are not sure she actually has pneumonia. The thought is still a virus that is creating mucus, which clogs her airways. When she desats out of the blue, like she did yesterday, it is probably a mucus plug. They continue the antibiotics because they can't be certain right now.
So, we sit and wait for this to pass. Once it passes, we hope the continuous asthma meds prevent her from getting this bad with the next virus to strike.
Good night!
