McKenzie had a slight setback today and will not be released to
the NICU for a couple more days. Unfortunately, the doctors don't
know what caused her setback. She had eleveated lactic acid levels,
meaning that her oxygen-rich blood was concentrated in her core
rather than going to her periphery as needed. If it wasn't for the
blood test, they would have no idea anything was out of the
ordinary. She looked great, her vitals were stable. And an hour
later, her blood was normal again. But, to be certain she is ready
to move on, they are keeping her in the ICU longer. It makes us
realize how concerned Children's Hospital is and how well our
daughter is being cared for everyday. Thank goodness we live in
Michigan and have options as wonderful as Children's Hospital!
On a higher note, McKenzie began occupational therapy today to teach her to eat properly. Today was her evaluation and tomorrow she will begin the lessons and exercises she will have to do to get her mouth ready to suck a bottle. Right now, especially from all of the tape she has had on her face, her muscles are tight and need to be trained for when she comes home.
