Mar 20, 2008

Today has been a very, very long day. Dale and I went down to the NICU at 6:15 to see McKenzie for her surgery. We were then informed that McKenzie had spiked a fever around 101 degrees twice in four hours. By 6:45, we were informed that the surgery was being post-poned because of a possible infection. They were doing tests and planning on placing the shunt on Monday because luckily enough McKenzie's oxygen saturation levels are high enough to wait. The next several hours went by very slowly as I waited to get released from the hospital myself.

When Dale and I went back to see McKenzie around noon, there was a large group of doctors and nurses surrounding her and connecting more tubes. She had had a time period where her heart rate was way too fast, so they were hooking her up to an EKG machine (15-leads on her itty bitty chest) to see what caused the rapid heart beat in case it happens again. There are now more tubes and wires coming from her than an HD TV. She is handling it very well and had to have yet another IV put in for more medication because of the rapid heart beat. Luckily, her fever never returned and the heart beat is being monitored and should not affect Monday's surgery.

The lucky girl not only had plenty of Daddy time today (which she always gets), but with me out of the hospital, she had both parents and all four grandparents were spoiling her today. I think she might be getting scared because she is realizing the crazy family she born into! (Just kidding)

We did have a bright spot in that they found a pacifier for her with a cut out for the tubes to go by, so she can suck again. She is very happy being able to suck on the pacifier and hold on to a finger. She loves it! Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, we appreciate it muchly and so does McKenzie. We tell her about all of the people thinking about her and pulling for her. She is very calm at those times.

Thinking of You
Stothers,
You are in our thoughts. Your hearts are so big that McKenzie and her red hair will be loved greatly as she battles to get stronger. Plus Mel if her heart is as big as yours, I have no doubt she'll be fine. Thinking of you with warm wishes,
Melissa and Mike DeLuka
