Through the night, Izzy was able to sleep with a little less
than 3 liters of oxygen. That didn't last. As soon as she woke up,
her sats dropped dramatically. She wasn't even moving. The only way
to get her sats above 90 where the cardiologists and pulmonologists
require it (and so does Izzy), was to raise her to 4.5 liters.
Through the morning, we weaned down to 3.5 liters of oxygen. Just
now, after waking up, she desatted (80 on the O2) and she was
breathing crazy hard (respiration of 72, when normally it is 30). I
was just holding her in my arms. She wasn't moving. The good thing
is that her lungs sound better with each passing day. The problem
is that they can't explain why she is not breathing well on her
own. We have to wait for Dr. Doshi to see her I guess. He has been
on vacation all week and won't return until at least Monday. If
Izzy continues down this route, she'll be here well into next week.
The docs are bascially going to keep their hands off of her and let
her rest until Dr. Doshi returns. That will make her happier, but I
don't know enough to know if that is what she needs. Unfortunately,
it is our only choice since the hospital is bascially empty for the
holiday.
While we are here, the attending thinks Izzy should start occupational therapy next week to work on her eating of solids. She can only handle the things that melt in her mouth. Otherwise, she chokes. It would be nice to get her some tips, especially since she won't see the craineofacial specialist about her palate until the end of August. Might as well make use of this time when Izzy is stuck here. She really wants to eat what we eat, but every time we try, she chokes, which leads to messes since it usually gets her gag reflex.
So, we sit here AGAIN. Phin got much sadder, much quicker this time. Its probably because he is sicker than normal with 1/2 a parental unit. He has the same virus as Izzy and is on the same course as she is, but he is not as sick. He is actually doing fairly well today, but he did ask "doesn't daddy want to see me?" this morning when I told him he was going to spend the night at Ma's house. I, of course, said that Daddy always wants to see you, so we called him on the phone. Dale broke a little more. Then Phin got the notion that he was spending the night at Ma's house, so his cousins were going to be there. I had to tell him no, they live too far away. He said okay, but was still bummed. Luckily, he is only 2.5 because I took him for a walk, then Ma came, and he forgot he was sad. Hopefully, when he sees the frogs, he will perk up on his own.
Enjoy your Independence Day and thank a service person for helping us maintain that independence.
