Izzy's Problem

So, Dale figured out Izzy's problem. Since this weekend, Izzy hasn't been eating. Saturday, she spiked a temp for a couple of hours. It went down with some motrin and then Sunday she started getting a slightly runny nose. It wasn't a big deal at all, but she wouldn't eat. Then, she wouldn't sleep. She has been waking up early, early moaning. At daycare, she won't sleep and she just moans. (Not moans as she was in pain, but the moaning she does when she is tired.) Nothing makes her happy and she won't eat, but we couldn't figure out what was wrong. We just assumed it was the slightly runny nose and her not sleeping, but that didn't seem like enough to make her so NOT happy.

This morning she was miserable, she wouldn't eat, and she was overly tired. Since I had to go to work, we decided that I would drop the kids at daycare and Dale would leave work at 11:00 to pick her up in time for lunch and then a good long nap in her own bed, hoping good sleep would get her out of the funk. When he got there, he discovered gunk coming out of her ear. We're guessing that she has had an ear infection for quite a while now and she never once pulled on her ear. She didn't favor it. She didn't do anything besides not eating or sleeping. Since it is so difficult to get her to eat and sleep, we didn't realize there was something more going on. I feel so guilty that I missed this. She didn't act like she was in pain, only tired! If only, if only, then we would have gotten her to the doctor's sooner. I hope this doesn't delay the cath.

Hey Mel,
Please don't beat yourself up....who would guess? This is a "right of passage" for all of us, you know. I had my 5 yr old at the Pediatrician's last month for strep throat. While there, I asked her to check my 8 year old's throat as well....just in case, being that Strep is so contagious. Mind you, my 8 yr old had no complaints at the time. It turned out she had a significant ear infection going on but had absolutely no symptoms. My Pediatrician suggests she has a high pain tolerance as I'm sure your sweet Izzy probably does as well. Do take great care-

Hind sight is 20/20...You're a parent with little kids...it takes things like these to learn from. Its okay. Its just getting it taken care of now...You're doing great! Hang in there..All of you!! This too shall pass. =)

don't be hard on yourself. we're not mindreaders!! if baby doesn't pull on her ear, then we don't know!!! glad she'll be getting better now!!!

Don't feel bad about not catching Izzy's ear infection. This is a common story from many of the parents of out day care kids! The reaction to ear infections is varied and not always the same each time for the same child. There is so much going on with Izzy it is easy to miss the connection. Now that you know you can take care of it and she can get better.

I know how you feel, when my son was little.. he fell on his elbow, we put him to bed that night, and in the a.m. he was favoring it.. we later that evening took him in, and it was broke!! He was only like a year old! Talk about guilt!!
