I'd like to say that the last couple of days have been
uneventful. They have been as compared to the hospital stay, but we
already had to make an unplanned trip to the doctor's office.
Luckily, it was nothing. Izzy has been favoring her right ear for
several days. We thought it was because she had that IV in her neck
on the right. She has been more fussy since she has been home. We
attributed that to teething (she looks to have about 4 more coming
in). But Saturday morning, she had ooze coming out of her right
ear, so I immediately thought we had missed yet another ear
infection. We set off to the doctors to find out it was only excess
ear wax (a very common problem for red heads). So, a false alarm.
Thankfully, it was our first false alarm. I felt foolish, but know
it was the right thing to do. We can't take any chances right
now.
Izzy is exhausted. She looks tired all of the time, but she won't sleep as much as needed. She is sleeping more here than in the hospital, but she still wants to be involved and last night she spent a lot of time awake making noises. We weren't sure if they were happy or sad. Right now, she is making those noises in bed. She was falling alseep in her high chair eating breakfast, so we put her back to bed. Then she started playing. We're leaving her there until she falls asleep. I'm sure it will be quick.
Her lungs are still crazy full. We continue to do the chest pounding to loosen the flem, but it is up to her to get rid of it through coughing. She is not doing that as much. She wakes up with her face swollen each morning, even though we have her bed on an incline.
The worst part is she is refusing to eat her bottle. We are managing to get her nurishment through solids (which is a good thing), but it is very hard to tell if she is getting enough to heal and grow. I guess the judge will be whether she gains weight.
McKenzie is playing a lot though and much happier here than in the hospital. She loves to sit and play with us, finding a toy, handing it to us, and getting it back. She dances with excitment. Not the dancing she did pre-surgery, she doesn't have the energy to be that vigorous and I'm sure it would hurt for her to move her arms the way she did before, but she dances.
Phinney enjoys having his sister back too. Within 10 minutes of being home, he must have walked up to her six different times to give her big hugs. He was chanting "My Izzy back." I think he especially likes having all of us together. I do too.
While we still have some challenges ahead of us, we are definitely moving in the right direction. I've decided not to worry about McKenzie's progress until all of her bruises have healed. She has bruises everywhere from all of the places they tried to start IVs or where IVs busted. I can't imagine that is comfortable. If those are gone and she is acting the same as now, then I'll worry.
We hope everyone had a great weekend and hope the M-M Walkers raised lots of money to fight asthma. We have two causes that are very dear to our family---CHDs and Asthma. My three year old nephew, Xavier, had to fight to breathe every day of his infant life and now he is doing well. We need to keep it that way! And keep his mommy around too.
