McKenzie started school yesterday and it was a sucess. She
rolled over, grabbed for toys, and enjoyed herself thoroughly. We
were there for an hour, but after 45 minutes she was plain tuckered
out, so I fed her and she crashed. The teachers were all happy with
the progress she had made since they first met her 3 weeks ago.
Unfortunately, I did not get any pictures of McKenzie at her first
day of school. I brought the camera, but forgot.
McKenzie is pretty much over her illness now. It really stopped actively affecting her Monday night, but she hasn't returned to her pre-illness level of eating. She has only been getting about 13 ounces a day. We are hopeful that she will realize that she no longer has the bug and it is okay to eat. We want the dark circles under her eyes gone and not to be woken up at 5:15 (or 2:00 a.m. followed by 4:00 a.m., followed by 5:15) since she is hungry early.
We are also dealing with a jealous 2-year-old. Whenever we have Izzy on the ground to play, Phin tries to get in there too. He steals her toys and he tries to get her out of the way by kicking, hitting, or sitting on her. It is a challenge, but Izzy doesn't mind because she loves her brother. He is her favorit. Luckily, at every other time, Phin is usually very good with her. If she cries, he finds a pacifier to put in her mouth. When she gets angry in her car seat, he rocks it because he knows she likes that. And, he is constantly giving her hugs. We have to remind him to be gentle, but he is doing very well considering he is two and wants to do what he wants to do when he wants to do it without any interference.
Everyone would be amazed at how much Phin has changed even since his birthday a month ago. I would guess that his vocabulary has doubled. He speaks in 2 and 3 word sentences and his imagination is blossoming. He can count to 10 and recognizes all of the upper case letters, but still gets some confused (like P and B) and he recognizes the vast majority of lower case letters. His favorite things are still books, especially the poetry of Shel Silverstein right now. He loves Thomas the tank engine. He has been playing with Thomas, Percy, and James for the last 40 minutes without deviation. Our work now is trying to get him to learn colors. It is proving to be difficult, but I think he may know blue now.
