October

Another month has passed and we have made progress. Izzy has had more good days than bad at school and she smiles a whole lot more. And she has worked hard to make these positive changes while having a sinus infection that just won't go away. Izzy is growing so much!

We have continued to concentrate on positive reinforcement with Izzy. That is getting through to her. Unfortunately, there are still times when her fears of the kids laughing at her become to great (they do not laugh, but she is petrified that they will). When Izzy is overcome with fear and worry over how she will be perceived, she lashes out--hitting and kicking other kids, throwing chairs in the classroom, screaming and yelling, flailing about on the floor in the school. It has not been pleasant.

Thankfully, Izzy is working very hard to stop these behaviors before they begin. We are all working very hard in helping her to identify them. And we've provided Izzy with lots of tools to stop these behaviors. The latest tool is a full time aide who shadows Izzy and helps her all day in the classroom. Ms. Darlene started Monday and seems to be helping Izzy. There is now an adult always with Izzy who can help Izzy identify danger situations and stop them before the breakdown comes. Even better, Izzy asked for help from Ms. Darlene today. This is a big step for McKenzie in growing and we are very hopeful she will help.

On another front, we are also trying new things for Izzy to sleep better at night. Izzy has suffered from terrible night terrors for a long time. They have only been getting worse since school started. The poor baby was so scared this past Saturday after awaking several times from the terrors that she didn't want to go back to sleep even the next night. So, after lots of discussions and trying many techniques to help ease her fears, Izzy was started on a very low dose of valium at bedtime to help calm her and ease the night terrors. It has only been two nights, but she seems to be doing fairly well with it. And for the first time in as long as I can remember, Izzy woke up this morning and said she didn't have any nightmares. It may be a baby step, but with each baby step forward, we get Izzy into a better place.

Look at that smiling face! That is the face of child who had just woken up without nightmares:

Other than working on Izzy's fears, anger, and control issues (and fighting a sinus infection for weeks), we have had a fairly calm month, except for one huge and exciting thing: Izzy was granted a wish from a local non-profit, The Jenna Kast Believe in Miracles Foundation! On Tuesday, October 22, a beautiful playscape was delivered and installed in the backyard for Izzy and Phin to be able to play together and enjoy together. Below is a pictorial to take you through the magical evening.

There was a newspaper article published about Izzy and Phin and the Foundation today. You can find it at this link: Charity helps kindergartner slide into fun. We are so grateful to Paula Kast and the Believe in Miracles Foundation. They have brought a huge smile to Izzy's face. She can go outside and play for a couple of minutes at a time, then come in and rest, and go right back on playing. Seeing so much happiness coming from the kids has been wonderful for Dale and I as well.
We hope your October was just as nice and that if you celebrate, that Halloween is wonderful. Our Harry Potter and Fix It Felix Jr wish you a happy Halloween!

What a great post! Izzy is learning to reach out and finding that help is there. Her world is getting bigger and hopefully her fears and anger are getting smaller. What a great gift the play structure is to allow Izzy and Phin to play together. The park came to Izzy!!
Always remember that love surrounds you. Love, June & David

Found your Care Page through my friend's site. I will be adding your precious daughter, and your family to my prayers. Perhaps the new play yard activity will improve McKenzie's sleep issues, which may help with behavior issues too? God bless and keep you!
